An estimated 50-80% of those who had Covid-19 experience symptoms three months and after initial infection. The most common lingering symptoms are: fatigue, body aches, shortness of breath, brain fog, difficulty concentrating/focusing, headaches and insomnia. Some people with symptoms have damage to organs (lungs, heart, brain, kidneys) but many others who have debilitating symptoms have no damage to their organs: these people are experiencing something that happens after other viruses too, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). With over 27.5 million cases to date, this means that 13.5 million to 22 million Americans are currently struggling with post Covid health concerns.
Post Covid Syndrome or Long Haulers or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome… whatever its labeled, undeniably it is a now major health crisis in our country. And since Covid-19 and post Covid is new, no one really knows exactly what to do medically to treat these patients. This is also true for other post viral CFS. Hence, why symptoms persist and become chronic illness. If there was effective medical treatment, we would not have these lingering cases. That’s the bad news.
The good news?! While Western or BioMedical or allopathic medicine is not good at treating post-viral conditions, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine has a long history of treating these sorts of conditions! In Eastern Medicine theory these cases are called Shao Yang Syndromes: it’s said this happens when the pathogen is ‘half in and half out’. When the Wei Qi (the immune response) is stuck in a battle with the pathogen, causing what can seem like autoimmune flares and remission.
Research confirms that Acupuncture is very helpful to those suffering from CFS from other viruses. Patients reporting within the long hauler community: they find Acupuncture to be helpful. Harvard University found that ElectroAcupuncture quells cytokine inflammation. (We use the Harvard protocol at Yin Rising Acupuncture.) And scientific research into how Acupuncture helps relieve CFS is giving us helpful insights into what causes the symptoms. For example a study found that Acupuncture helped in the formation of ATP, which is the ‘building block’ of energy, raising muscular force (Dong, 2018). Their insight being that CFS interferes with normal ATP production, hence why the primary symptom is fatigue and why sleep is not refreshing and restorative. Acupuncture restores this function!
Eastern Medicine also has specific herbal formulas handed down through centuries of herbs for these condition that prompts the release of interferon which increases the bodies anti-viral defenses. Another study found this formula activates the release of macrophages which are the white blood cells that ‘eat’ virus and bacteria. The herbs we carry at Yin Rising Acupuncture are third party tested for quality and safety.
