It’s that time of year again! Fall is just around the corner and with the cooler temperatures, unfortunately comes the flu season. With the hustle and bustle of modern life, the stresses that are frequently placed upon the body can wreak havoc on the immune system. Suffering from a weakened immune system can cause the body to be much more susceptible to contracting viruses such as influenza or the common cold. Even getting a flu shot doesn’t fully protect the body from this threat.
But fortunately, there is a way to help! Acupuncture is a completely natural way to help boost the immune system and keep the body strong so that it is better equipped to fight off potential pathogens.
When the body is under stress, it releases cortisol, a steroid hormone that actually suppresses the immune system. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the levels of cortisol in the body, which means not only a reduction in stress levels, but a boost to the immune system as well. Receiving regular acupuncture can keep cortisol levels at bay, allowing the immune system to flourish, and therefore making it easier to make it through flu season unscathed.
For those who do manage to come down with a bug, acupuncture can also be utilized to hasten the recovery time. If at all possible, it’s best to get acupuncture at the very onset of a cold or the flu, which can give the body just the boost it needs to kill the pathogen before it really kicks in.
Acupuncture can also be used to help with recovery once the worst of a bug has passed. It is especially useful for resolving lingering coughs, bronchitis, sinusitis, and other pesky symptoms that like to stick around after a bug has mostly run its course.
In addition to getting acupuncture, we also highly recommend the basic, common sense stuff; getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water, eating healthy food and maybe taking a supplement such as Airborne or Emergen-C. All of these things combined can really make a difference this flu season.
One final thought: please note that we take the right to everybody’s health and well being seriously. We therefore take many precautions to keep our facility as clean as possible, especially during the flu season, to prevent the spread of germs. We also ask that anybody coming in for treatment during flu season to please be aware the following ground rules:
Anybody coughing will be asked to wear a face mask, which we will provide.
If feeling under the weather, please let us know so we can properly clean the sheets and chairs.
If a fever, vomiting or diarrhea is present, please do not come in for treatment! We recommend staying home and resting until well, but we will be more than happy to help with recovery once the worst has passed.
